Curing a Hangover – Part I

For those of you Middle Managers who will be doing extra “curls” this New Year’s Eve, I am writing about traditional hangover cures.  This is the first in a four part series to be concluded tomorrow.  If you have hangover cures you would like to share, we would love to hear them!

Part 1 – Hydration (Gatorade, Water)

Part of the reason you feel hungover is because alcohol acts a diuretic and, therefore, causes dehydration.  That is the reason you spend a lot of time in the bathroom urinating while you are drinking.

There are two ways to approach rehydration.

The first is to drink water or fruit juice between alcoholic drinks.  Bonus, if someone tries to give you a hard time about drinking the “lite” drinks, simply tell them it’s a ScrewDriver or alcoholic concotion.

The second approach is to down a very large glass of water or Gatorade before going to bed (or passing out, as the case may be).  When you finish the large glass of water, refill it and repeat.  The trick is to rehydrate as much as possible to alievate symptoms of dehydration (and therefore, hangover) before they occur.  Gatorade has a 6% carbohydrate solution and contains electrolytes, therefore it rehydrates more efficiently than water.

Personally, if I know I am going all out, I keep a big gallon jug of Gatorade ready to go in the fridge and drink as much as I can when I get home.

Part II focuses on tips you can use to make your absorption of alcohol slower, and your alcohol metabolism faster to prevent hangovers.

Part III will center on repacing nutrients you lost while drinking.

Part IV will be other miscellany regarding hangover cures, including the best “home made” cures that I have personally tried as well as any suggestions I receive here or via email.

 Party on!
